About Us
I will fondly refer to my customers as “The Katissa Poultry Freezer Gang”
I am aware of the challenges you as customers face and have faced dealing with Katissa Poultry’s way of doing things. I am aware of the times that we live in and the fact that the products here are for the most part in a frozen state. This presents a time loss and extra effort for the customer. I have always had a lot of respect for my customers, for the most part I consider my customers to be knowledgeable and concerned about the way their food is produced, willing to go out of their way to obtain what they believe in. This is no small thing in today’s hectic lifestyle. Farming is in my blood, it is a part of me. I was raised on a dairy farm, my Mother always told me you are what you eat and I believe that. I have been working with poultry for 30 years now. The other half of “About Us” Dick Delight regretfully passed away Nov.15.2010 after a 15 year battle with cancer. I carried on this farm in spite of his illness with doubts in my mind about whether I was doing the right thing during his illness but I strongly believe that the existence of this farm and the way the animals are produced is very important. Dick was a much needed part of the farm before his illness and the early years of his cancer, he was a top notch handy man and the farm has missed having an on call handy man. Many of my customers have been patronizing the farm for 30 years and knew Dick also; we don’t want Dick or his efforts to be forgotten.
As a producer I have many challenges also, this is just for your knowledge and understanding. The ability to produce small quantities allows for very hands on care for the animals (good scenario for the animals) but is very hard to do when we live in a world of mass production. Small quantities of feed and special non-medicated, personal feeding programs are very expensive. The processing for the birds is also very high due to the small numbers. The situation for commercial food producers is a big job when the population keeps growing. The small farmer scenario has all but disappeared. The demand for food and the available farm land locally disallows the number of small farms that it would take to supply the population with the required amount of food needed. Katissa Poultry is producing for a small special market of people that remember how things used to be or have gone out of their way to educate themselves about food production and are willing to support the cost of small production.
Please see the page called our chickens for more information regarding the growing process and feeding program for the birds.
